Modern Grounds

The project was inserted lightly into the existing woodland setting, creating blurred edges between the cultivated and natural.

Our clients had lived in their house for many years but were ready to update their outdoor space to reflect their current lifestyle.

A dramatic new covered porch was installed as part of the landscaping project. Retractable screens provide a mosquito free space to hang out in the evenings.

Large boulders, quarried from the region, were used to retain the hillside and create more usable space. Native grasses cascade over the top to soften the harshness of the stone.

A more formal hedge creates a sense of order to the natural space while still blending with the surroundings. Plantings were chosen to emphasize the patio and the new porch, create habitat for wildlife, and contrast the hardscapes.

Lighting was designed to illuminate the hardscapes and specimen plants, and to increase safety while highlighting the details of the bluestone paths.

Paving details in the natural bluestone paths help signify a change of space function while also creating a custom element.

The linear bluestone paving visually lengthens the space, creating the illusion of a longer journey to the patio nestled into its lushly planted surroundings.
