MNLA Vision Awards
The MNLA 2026 Vision Awards were last night at the Como Zoo Conservatory! Thank you to the Minnesota Nursey & Landscape Association for the recognition. biota Landscapes received 2 awards:
Platinum for Sustainability in Practice
This recognition reflects the work embedded in our headquarters and practice — from solar-powered operations and battery-powered equipment to pollinator gardens, permeable paving, and community partnerships that reach beyond the industry.
Gold for Layered Landscapes
Sustainability informed every choice for this project— recycled decking, locally sourced stone, and layered plantings that will evolve into living mulch. A blend of natives, ornamentals, and edibles supports biodiversity and gives the family space to grow and learn.

This recognition celebrates the work happening at our headquarters and within our practice — from solar-powered operations and battery-powered horticultural equipment to pollinator gardens, permeable paving, and community partnerships that extend beyond the landscape industry. As the first landscape company in Minnesota — and the Midwest — to become a Certified B Corporation, we’re proud to be part of a global community working toward more equitable and regenerative economies.
“Biota Landscapes is the Midwest’s only luxury landscape firm with integrated design, build, and lifetime care offerings and Certified B Corp ethical standards,” – Jim Saybolt, Founder & COO
Thank you to MNLA and to our incredible team whose care, creativity, and stewardship make this work possible every day.

This project began with a mid-century home whose outdoor spaces no longer functioned for the way the family lived. The landscape was reimagined into connected outdoor rooms — spaces designed to host everything from family dinners to larger community gatherings year-round. Invasive species were removed, sightlines and light were restored, and new patios, decks, and garden spaces were carefully layered into the site while preserving mature trees and the natural grade of the property. Sustainability was integrated at every level — from recycled composite decking and locally sourced stone to dense plantings that will function as living mulch as they mature.
“The goal was to create multiple usable outdoor areas while layering sustainable materials, thoughtful planting, and long-term stewardship into the design,” – Elizabeth [Designer at biota]. Plantings combine natives, nativars, ornamentals, and edible gardens to support biodiversity while giving the family space to grow vegetables and teach their daughter where food comes from. “Elizabeth had a great vision for our space and was able to utilize our yard’s elevation and different areas to their full potential… Everyone at biota really takes pride in what they do,” said our client. This project reflects what we believe at biota: landscapes can be beautiful, functional, and deeply sustainable — all at once.
Congratulations to Elizabeth and our entire design + build team.
