Designing for the Landscape, Not Just the Night
Every property tells a different story after sunset.
For this award-winning Minneapolis backyard, our design team drew inspiration from traditional Asian gardens to create a peaceful urban retreat for an empty-nesting couple.
Although compact in size, every design decision serves multiple purposes. A new garage anchors the backyard while a courtyard between the home and garage creates an intimate outdoor room. Graphic paving visually widens the space, custom screens provide privacy, and columnar trees establish a living green wall.
Lighting became the final element that brought the entire design together.
Rather than simply placing fixtures along a walkway, each path light was carefully selected to represent one of the five elements of nature: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space. Around the patio, four lighting fixtures were intentionally positioned so their shadows intersect, symbolically connecting four of those natural elements throughout the space.
It’s a subtle detail that many visitors may never consciously notice, yet it creates an atmosphere that feels balanced, calm, and immersive. This project earned recognition with a 2023 Minnesota Nursery & Landscape Association Award, demonstrating how thoughtful design can transform even a modest urban backyard into an extraordinary outdoor experience.
