biota Landscapes is a regional leader in stylish, sustainable landscape design. Sustainability is a buzzy word, but what does it truly mean? And can individual landscapes really make a difference for the greater good? For biota Landscapes, the answer is a resounding “yes.” Here, sustainability is not only the cornerstone of every design, but an intention that guides every decision.
“Sustainability is not a look; it’s a philosophy of how a landscape comes together,” says Steve Modrow, who cofounded biota Landscapes in 2005. From sourcing plants and hardscape materials locally to selecting native plants, with the understanding that “native” is a moving target amid climate change, the firm guides clients in selecting efficient and effective designs that will dazzle for decades. This spirit holds true whether working on a cozy cottage garden, a sleek modern oasis, or something uniquely in between. As a Certified B Corporation, even the biota Landscapes headquarters uses solar array to fully power its facility. “Even on the smallest scales, we can make an impact on global sustainability,” says Modrow.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS
With three distinct service lines—design, construction, and lifetime care—biota Landscapes partners with customers for the entirety of their landscape journey, often across multiple properties. “Once you’re in the biota family, we’re with you all the way through. We want every client experience to be seamless,” says Modrow. “From small to large and everything in between, we’re excited when our clients are excited.”
